Beyond Finding Your Best Colors: Learning to Use Every Color
COCORY JOURNAL 4-1
After a personal color analysis, we often remember a few particular colors.
The ones that looked especially flattering, made our skin appear more vibrant, or appeared on our personal color result card.
But when we return to our everyday wardrobe, another question often comes up.
“Does this mean I should only wear these colors?”
Personal color analysis helps us identify colors that work well with our appearance. But its purpose is not to limit every future color choice.
At COCORY Color, we do not consider a person’s most flattering colors to be restricted to one specific shade.
Colors differ in lightness, chroma, and hue. When placed near the face, these differences can create distinct visual responses.
The goal is not simply to identify one perfect color.
It is to understand which color characteristics work harmoniously with your appearance, how far that harmonious range extends, and how to use that knowledge in everyday life.
01. Your Best Color Is Not Your Only Flattering Color
Imagine comparing several fabrics during a personal color analysis.
One color may make your skin appear more even, visually smooth, and naturally vibrant than the others.
That color might be selected as a Best Color.
But identifying a particularly flattering color does not mean every other color is unsuitable.
Color harmony is not always a simple yes-or-no judgment.
One shade may blend naturally with your overall appearance. Another may create a more vibrant impression, while a third may produce a more subdued visual effect.
By comparing these responses, we can recognize that several colors may work harmoniously with the same person, even if they do not create identical results.
A Best Color is not a rule for excluding other colors. It is a reference point for understanding what works particularly well.
02. A Color’s Name Does Not Tell the Whole Story
People often say, “Blue looks good on me,” or “Yellow doesn’t suit me.”
But not all blues or yellows have the same characteristics.
A pale, muted blue is different from a vivid electric blue or a deep, subdued navy.

Although they belong to the same general hue family, their visual properties differ.
Three fundamental color characteristics help us understand these differences:
- Lightness: How light or dark is the color?
- Chroma: How vivid or muted is the color?
- Hue: Where does the color fall within the range of red, yellow, blue, and other hues?
When these characteristics change, a color can produce a different visual response near the face, even if its general hue remains the same.
This is why it can be misleading to describe an entire hue family as either flattering or unflattering.
At COCORY, we focus on the actual characteristics of colors and how they interact visually with the face, rather than relying on color names alone.
Understanding these relationships is the foundation for identifying a broader range of wearable colors.
03. From Finding One Color to Understanding a Harmonious Range
How can we identify a range of colors that works well for an individual?
COCORY’s personal color analysis involves placing different fabric colors near the face and comparing their visual effects under consistent observation conditions.
One important area of observation is the Apple Zone, located around the central region of the face.
During comparisons, we pay attention to four primary questions:
- Does the color connect naturally with the person’s skin and overall appearance?
- Does the skin appear more luminous and vibrant?
- Does the skin texture appear visually smoother?
- Does the skin tone appear more even?
If one color produces these positive responses, we can explore neighboring colors with slightly different levels of lightness, chroma, or hue.
For example, if relatively muted colors consistently create a harmonious appearance, several hues and lightness levels within that general direction may also work well.
However, moving toward considerably higher chroma or a different lightness level may produce a less harmonious response.
The skin might appear relatively redder or more yellow, or the overall skin tone may look less even.
Through repeated comparisons, we are looking for more than one successful shade.
We are identifying color characteristics that repeatedly produce positive visual responses and exploring the range in which those responses occur.
These observations are part of COCORY’s analysis methodology. They should not be interpreted as evidence that everyone has the same range or that one numerical value can determine all flattering colors.

04. Why COCORY Distinguishes Daily Tone, Best Color, and Season Tone
COCORY’s CCCS (COCORY Color Curating System) does not reduce every analysis result to a single seasonal label.
Using its 12-tone framework, COCORY compares the characteristics of different colors and organizes the results into Daily Tone, Best Color, and Season Tone.
Each concept serves a different purpose.
Daily Tone — Your Core Range for Everyday Color Choices
Daily Tone represents a central tonal direction that works harmoniously with your appearance and can guide everyday clothing choices.
Rather than being one specific color, it includes a range of hues that share related tonal characteristics.
Best Color — Colors That Produce Particularly Positive Responses
Best Colors are individual shades that show especially positive visual responses during comparison.
They provide useful reference points for color selection but do not exclude every other possible choice.
Season Tone — Additional Possibilities Beyond Your Core Tone
Season Tone helps identify colors within other seasonal tone groups that may also create favorable responses.
Since multiple tonal groups can include colors that work well for the same person, wearable colors do not necessarily stop at one seasonal category.
These three results are not competing answers.
They provide complementary ways to understand your central color direction, identify particularly flattering shades, and explore additional possibilities.
05. What Changes When You Understand Your Color Range?
If you treat personal color results as a strict set of rules, shopping can become unnecessarily restrictive.
“This isn’t my tone, so I shouldn’t wear it.”
“This isn’t one of my Best Colors, so I should avoid it.”
Understanding color characteristics leads to more useful questions.
“How does this shade differ in lightness or chroma from the colors that suit me?”
“Would a more muted version work better?”
“Could I incorporate this color through an accessory, a garment farther from my face, or a different color combination?”
There is an important distinction here.
A color that creates a favorable response next to the face is not necessarily the same as a color that can be successfully incorporated into an outfit.
A shade that is not particularly flattering directly beneath the face may still be useful in trousers, bags, shoes, or accessories.
It may also work within a carefully considered color combination.
This does not mean the color suddenly becomes a Best Color in the analysis.
It means that the placement, proportion, and surrounding colors can be adjusted to create different styling possibilities.
Personal color analysis can therefore become a starting point for more intentional decisions rather than a set of restrictions on clothing and accessories.

06. Knowing Your Colors Means Having More Ways to Choose
If we assume that only one color suits us, personal color analysis becomes restrictive.
But when we understand the lightness, chroma, and hue characteristics that work harmoniously with our appearance, our choices become more flexible.
We can prioritize colors that produce particularly positive responses while also finding thoughtful ways to incorporate the colors we love.
The goal is not to claim that every color is equally flattering.
It is to recognize that different colors offer different degrees of harmony and different possibilities for use.
This is where color curating begins at COCORY Color.
We move beyond simply discovering flattering colors toward understanding how a wider range of colors can become part of everyday life.
Knowing which colors suit you should not mean having fewer options.
It should mean having a better understanding of how to choose among them.

4-2. Finding Your Range of Lightness and Chroma
Why can one shade of blue look naturally harmonious while another feels too intense?
In the next journal, we explore how lightness and chroma influence the visual response of colors near the face, and how systematic comparisons can help identify a more personalized range of flattering colors.
EDITORIAL NOTE
COCORY JOURNAL documents personal color not simply as a system of categories or trends, but as a way of understanding the relationship between people and color.
Drawing on color theory and observations accumulated through our analysis practice, we explore how we observe, compare, and interpret the colors of each individual.
