[COCORY JOURNAL 3-6] Can More Than One Color Tone Suit You?

Observing How Color Changes the Face
COCORY JOURNAL 3-6

When people think about personal color analysis, they often expect to receive one definitive result: a single season or color tone that suits them best.

If they are classified as spring, does that mean only spring colors will work? If they are classified as winter, should they avoid colors from other seasons?

In actual color comparisons, however, positive visual responses are not always limited to a single tone.

Someone who looks naturally harmonious in light, soft colors may also respond well to slightly more subdued shades. Likewise, someone who benefits from vivid colors may not experience the same effect with every vivid color.

Why can multiple color tones work for the same person?

To understand this, we need to look beyond seasonal labels and examine how different colors interact visually with the face.

01. Is Personal Color Analysis About Finding Just One Tone?

The purpose of personal color analysis is not simply to assign someone to a season.

It is to observe how the appearance of the skin and overall image changes when different colors are placed near the face, and to identify the color characteristics that create harmonious results.

Three fundamental properties help us understand these differences:

  • Hue: The attribute that distinguishes colors such as red, yellow, and blue.
  • Lightness: How light or dark a color appears.
  • Chroma: The degree of color intensity or saturation.

A color tone can be understood as a group of colors sharing a particular range of these characteristics.

Finding that one tone suits a person does not automatically mean that every color outside that tone is unsuitable.

Different tones can contain colors with similar lightness or chroma characteristics. Differences in hue can also influence how those colors interact with the face.

What matters more than the name of a tone is identifying the color characteristics that consistently produce harmonious visual responses.

02. Different Tones Can Produce Similar Visual Responses

Imagine someone whose face appears naturally harmonious with light, low-chroma colors.

This person may respond positively not only to colors within one seasonal category but also to colors from other categories that share similar characteristics.

Conversely, colors within the same seasonal tone may produce different levels of harmony depending on their individual properties.

This does not mean seasonal color classifications are necessarily incorrect.

Seasonal categories and color tones provide useful structures for organizing colors. However, a classification alone cannot fully describe every relationship between a person and an individual color.

At COCORY, we examine several visual responses during color comparison:

  1. Does the color connect naturally with the skin and overall image?
  2. Does the skin appear more luminous and lively?
  3. Does the skin texture appear smoother?
  4. Does the skin tone appear more even?

We pay particular attention to the Apple Zone, the central facial area, when observing these responses.

When positive responses appear repeatedly across colors from different tones, the person’s harmonious color range may extend beyond a single category.

These observations concern perceived appearance under different surrounding colors. They should not be interpreted as proof that the measured color of the skin itself has changed.

03. How Does COCORY Evaluate Multiple Color Tones?

COCORY Color uses its own color analysis framework, the CCCS (COCORY Color Curating System).

CCCS incorporates a 12-tone color system to organize and compare different color characteristics.

The analysis begins with skin color measurement using CUBE.

Measurements include L*, which represents lightness; a*, the red–green axis; and b*, the yellow–blue axis. COCORY also considers its b-a indicator when interpreting skin color characteristics.

However, these measurements do not independently determine which clothing colors will suit someone.

Measuring the current color of the skin and evaluating harmony through color comparison are two different processes.

The analysis continues by placing different fabric colors near the face.

COCORY first examines responses to changes in lightness and chroma, looking for characteristics that repeatedly produce positive visual effects. Differences between hues are then compared within the relevant ranges.

Rather than treating every tone as an isolated result, we look for shared patterns and meaningful differences across multiple colors.

For example, if two colors from different seasonal tones both appear harmonious, we can examine which color characteristics they have in common.

Even when both colors work well, they may differ in how naturally they connect with the skin or how luminous and even the complexion appears.

These comparisons help distinguish the most harmonious color direction from the broader range of colors a person can use.

04. Understanding Daily Tone, Best Color, and Season Tone

Recognizing that multiple tones may suit one person raises another question: how should these findings be organized into meaningful recommendations?

COCORY distinguishes between Daily Tone, Best Color, and Season Tone.

Daily Tone — Your Central Reference for Everyday Color

Daily Tone is the main tone selected from the harmonious color directions identified during the analysis.

It provides a practical reference for making everyday wardrobe and color choices.

Having a Daily Tone does not mean that other tones become unsuitable. Instead, it establishes a central reference within a wider set of possibilities.

Best Color — Individual Colors with Particularly Harmonious Results

Best Colors are specific colors selected through direct comparison within the recommended tone.

Not every color within the same tone produces an identical visual response.

COCORY compares factors such as perceived skin luminosity, evenness, and overall harmony to identify colors that work particularly well for an individual.

In other words, Daily Tone describes a broader family of color characteristics, while Best Colors represent specific selections within that family.

Season Tone — Extending Color Choices Across Seasons

Season Tone explores color directions that can be used across different seasonal palettes rather than limiting a person to one Daily Tone.

Each season offers different color atmospheres and combinations.

Based on the harmonious characteristics identified through comparison, COCORY explores how colors from multiple seasonal tones may become part of a person’s wardrobe.

These are not competing or contradictory results.

Daily Tone establishes an everyday reference, Best Colors identify specific harmonious choices, and Season Tone describes broader seasonal possibilities.

05. Does Having Multiple Suitable Tones Mean Every Color Works?

No. Having more than one suitable tone does not mean that every color is equally harmonious.

Different colors may create different levels or qualities of visual harmony.

One color may connect naturally with the skin, while another may make the complexion appear more lively.

Even colors within a single tone can produce different responses because their individual characteristics are not identical.

Instead of asking only, “Does this tone suit me?” we can ask more useful questions:

  • Which ranges of lightness and chroma consistently produce positive responses?
  • What do harmonious colors from different tones have in common?
  • Which individual colors work particularly well within a recommended tone?
  • How far can the usable color range extend while maintaining a harmonious result?

Answering these questions makes personal color analysis more useful than simply receiving a seasonal label.

06. Understanding What Truly Suits You

Personal color analysis does not have to define a person through one fixed seasonal category.

Its greater value lies in understanding which color characteristics create harmony and how those relationships can guide future choices.

A particular tone can provide a useful starting point.

But discovering that tone does not mean every other color must be excluded.

At COCORY, we combine measured skin color characteristics with visual observations from actual color comparisons to develop an individualized reference for color selection.

That reference should do more than identify one result. It should help people understand and navigate a wider range of colors.

Knowing which colors suit you is not about belonging to one category. It is about understanding the relationship between you and color.

4-1. Is There Only One Color That Suits You?

나에게 어울리는 색은 정말 하나뿐일까?

Throughout this series, we have explored how colors placed near the face influence perceived skin appearance.

In the next series, we move from understanding those responses to putting color analysis into practice.

Once you discover your Best Colors, do you really need to limit yourself to those few shades?

Our next journal explores how a Best Color can serve as a starting point for building a more flexible and expressive range of color choices.

EDITORIAL NOTE

COCORY JOURNAL documents personal color not simply as a matter of seasonal categories or trends, but as a way to understand the relationship between people and color.

Drawing on color theory and observations accumulated through our analysis practice, we explore how we observe, compare, and interpret the colors of each individual.
