From Fashion to Makeup: A K-Color Workshop for International Students in Seoul

What happens when personal color becomes something you learn together rather than simply a result you receive?

On October 14, COCORY welcomed 24 international students for the second session of a two-week K-Color mentoring program in Seoul.

Following the first week’s fashion color workshop, the second session focused on makeup colors—from understanding seasonal color directions to comparing detailed makeup tones and lip colors.

The program was organized by the Seodaemun-gu One-Person Household Support Center in connection with the Seodaemun-gu Family Center, offering international students living or studying in Seoul an opportunity to experience Korean color and beauty culture.

Learning How to Compare Makeup Colors

Before beginning the hands-on practice, participants first learned how COCORY’s makeup color tools are organized and used.

Through an instructor demonstration, they compared representative Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter makeup tones near the model’s face and observed how different colors changed the overall impression.

Rather than immediately choosing a favorite color, the participants first learned what to look for when comparing color harmony on the face.

This provided a common reference point before they began analyzing colors for one another.

From Seasonal Direction to Detailed Makeup Tones

Once the seasonal direction was established, the comparison became more specific.

Colors within the same season can create different impressions depending on their lightness, saturation, and overall tone. Participants therefore moved from representative seasonal tones to more detailed makeup color options.

At COCORY, identifying a season is not the final goal.

The important next step is to narrow the color range into something that can actually be used when selecting and coordinating makeup.

c

Connecting Makeup Tones with Lip Colors

After finding a suitable makeup tone, participants explored lip colors.

Using a color cosmetics tone guide, they compared specific lip shades within the direction they had already identified.

Instead of treating lipstick as a separate choice, the exercise encouraged them to see how a lip color works as part of the overall makeup color palette.

This step connected a broader color analysis with a product category they could easily recognize and use in everyday life.

d

Practicing in Pairs

After the demonstration, participants worked in pairs.

One person became the model while the other followed the comparison process they had just learned. They then switched roles and explored each other’s makeup colors.

The first week’s fashion session had involved working in groups of four. For the makeup session, working in pairs allowed participants to observe facial color changes more closely.

As they compared colors, they also discussed the differences they noticed and helped one another work through the process.

e

Seeing Colors as a Complete Makeup Palette

The final comparison brought the selected makeup tone and lip colors together near the face.

A color may work individually, but makeup is ultimately created through a combination of colors.

By viewing the selected colors together, participants could see how they created an overall makeup mood and how individual choices could be coordinated as one palette.

This was not a makeup application lesson. Instead, the focus was on visually understanding color harmony before applying makeup.

Taking the Results Into Everyday Life

At the end of the workshop, participants viewed makeup mood images related to their tones, helping them connect the colors they had analyzed with actual makeup looks.

Each participant also received a personal makeup color palette card to use as a reference after the program.

Across the two sessions, the students experienced personal color from two perspectives: fashion and makeup.

The process moved from learning the basic criteria to comparing real colors, practicing with one another, and finally connecting the results with colors they could use in everyday life.

For international students meeting through the program, color also became a natural way to interact. They were not only discovering their own colors but observing, discussing, and helping identify colors for someone else.
