Beyond seasonal categories: understanding the relationship between people and color
COCORY JOURNAL 1-1
Why Do We Look Different in Different Colors?
The same person can appear clearer and more defined in one color, while another may make redness, shadows, or unevenness in the complexion more noticeable.
The color itself has not changed.
Yet the way the person appears has.
This is where personal color analysis begins.
Personal color is often described simply as finding “the colors that suit you.” Seasonal categories such as Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter have also become one of the most familiar ways to understand personal color.
But the relationship between a person and color cannot always be fully explained by a single seasonal label.
What makes one color appear more harmonious than another? And which characteristics of that color are creating the difference?
At COCORY Color, these questions are the starting point of personal color analysis.
Color Never Exists in Isolation

We never perceive a color entirely on its own.
Its appearance is constantly influenced by surrounding colors, light, material, scale, and context.
The same is true when color is placed around a person.
The colors already present in the skin, hair, and eyes interact with colors introduced through clothing, makeup, and hair color. Together, they shape the overall visual impression.
So rather than asking only,
“What color is this person?”
we need to ask,
“What changes when this color is placed next to this person?”
That small shift in perspective moves personal color beyond simple classification and into the process of observation and analysis.
The Characteristics of a Color Matter More Than Its Name

“Pink looks good on me.”
That statement alone tells us very little about which colors actually create harmony.
There are countless variations of pink.
A warm pink with a yellow undertone and a cool pink with a bluish quality may share the same color name, yet behave very differently. A pale, muted pink creates a completely different visual effect from a deep, highly saturated one.
This is why color analysis looks beyond color names.
Hue, value, and chroma—as well as the relationships created by changes in these characteristics—help us examine how different colors affect the face and overall appearance.
The goal is not simply to memorize which individual colors “work.”
It is to understand the conditions under which color and person create visual harmony.
Personal Color Is Not About Assigning a Correct Answer
As personal color analysis has become more widely known, it has also become common to define people quickly through a single type.
“I’m a Summer, so I can’t wear this.”
“If you’re a Winter, you should wear these colors.”
Seasonal categories can be useful as a language for organizing and communicating color characteristics.
But a category is a tool for understanding a person. It is not the person themselves.
The purpose of analysis should not be to reduce the number of colors someone is allowed to use.
Instead, understanding your own color characteristics can give you a broader and more precise basis for making color choices.
Which colors create the most balanced harmony?
Which colors create stronger contrast?
How can those differences be intentionally used in styling, makeup, or image design?
Once these relationships are understood, color is no longer divided simply into what you “can” and “cannot” wear.
You gain the ability to decide how you want to use it.
Why Comparison Matters in Personal Color Analysis
![[COCORY JOURNAL 1-1] What Is Personal Color? chatgpt image 2026년 9월 7일 오후 04 51 29](https://cocoryofficial.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/ChatGPT-Image-2026년-9월-7일-오후-04_51_29-1024x512.png)
It is difficult to understand the effect of a color by looking at only one color in isolation.
Changes become much clearer through comparison.
What happens to the dimension of the face when the value becomes lighter or darker?
When chroma increases, does the person remain the visual focus, or does the color begin to dominate?
When the temperature of a color changes, how does the complexion appear in response?
By comparing these conditions one by one, we can begin to identify patterns that repeatedly create particular visual effects.
For COCORY Color, personal color analysis is therefore not a process of assigning a type based on a single impression.
It is a process of changing color conditions, observing the resulting visual changes, and identifying meaningful patterns within those repeated relationships.
From Seasonal Names to Personal Standards
Seasonal color analysis gives us a useful language for organizing a complex world of color.
But determining whether someone is Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter is not where personal color analysis has to end.
More important questions come afterward.
Why did this color create greater harmony?
Which characteristics of the color produced that change?
And how can those findings become practical standards for real-life color choices?
When we begin to see personal color not simply as a result, but as a way of understanding the relationship between a person and color, the way we use color changes as well.
Personal color becomes more than a preference, trend, or seasonal label.
It becomes a personal standard for making informed color choices.
This is why COCORY Color continues to study and establish color standards designed around people.

1-2. Why Does Color Look Different?
Why can the exact same color appear completely different depending on its background, surrounding colors, and light?
In the next COCORY JOURNAL, we explore color relativity and visual perception—two fundamental concepts for understanding how we see color before we begin analyzing personal color.
EDITORIAL NOTE
COCORY JOURNAL approaches personal color not simply as a system of types or trends, but as a framework for understanding the relationship between people and color.
Drawing from color theory and observations accumulated through analysis practice, this journal documents how COCORY observes, compares, and interprets color in relation to the individual.
