The COCORY System

A Different Kind of Color System

Why we all deserve a personal color system built for modern people,
and how COCORY built one.

01

The Overlooked Korean Color Standard

Korea has its own official color standard: the KS Color System. Yet it has become common to see advice like “avoid any studio that uses the KS Color System,” a claim that fundamentally misunderstands where personal color theory came from.

Personal color reached Korea by way of Japan, which itself adapted the American Munsell color system. Japan reshaped that framework, originally built around warm and cool tones for a wide range of skin types, by introducing neutral tones suited to Japanese skin.

Why? Because color perception is shaped by a country’s climate, geography, and culture. Color systems are built around the people who use them.

COCORY was founded on that same principle, building a system rooted in Korean color perception, using the KS Color System as its standard. As Korean culture has grown in global reach and influence, so too has the relevance of what we built. Today, people from all over the world come to COCORY, and our system is designed to meet them with precision, not guesswork.

02

A Problem of Imitation

As part of ongoing research, COCORY regularly reviews international personal color resources, partly to verify that what we are developing does not already exist elsewhere. In doing so, we have frequently encountered teaching tools and materials that are thinly disguised copies of established work, with minor modifications made to obscure their origins.

Being first to register something does not make it original. The truth tends to surface eventually. In fact, people outside COCORY have occasionally flagged issues we had not even noticed ourselves, which keeps us paying close attention.

03

Hue-First vs. Tone-First

Most personal color systems used in Korea today are imported from Japan, the US, the UK, and Germany, and they assess Korean features against a Western baseline. The result: some studios report over 60% of clients landing in Summer, while others see Autumn dominate disproportionately.

Foreign systems generally work like this: Spring = yellow base, Summer = blue and white, Autumn = gold, Winter = blue and black. Hue comes first. Season is assigned by warm or cool base, then tone is guided from there. The 12 tones of the PCCS system are grouped into four tiers, and each season draws from specific combinations of those tiers.

COCORY inverts this. The Nobel Prize-winning physical chemist Wilhelm Ostwald argued that value (lightness) governs both hue and saturation, that it is the property which contains and organizes the other two. The three properties of color are independent, but interdependent. Defining value and saturation through hue alone does not hold up structurally.

So COCORY identifies tone first, hue second. It is a tone-led system, built on the KS Color System, refined over years of real data from 50,000 people across 78 countries. The goal is the same as every system, finding what genuinely suits a person, but the process is fundamentally different. And when the process differs, the results differ too.

COCORY Skin Colorimeter Cube

Even professional sports have learned where human judgment ends and machine precision begins. In baseball, cameras now call balls and strikes with accuracy no umpire’s eye can match. Yet the best umpires still bring something a camera can’t: a feel for the moment, judgment built from years on the field. The best outcomes come from combining both, not choosing one over the other.

COCORY’s color curators work the same way. The CUBE exists to do what human memory alone cannot: measure skin tone data with scientific consistency, every time, for every client. That precision frees our curators to focus on what only a trained eye can do: reading lifestyle, personality, and personal image to shape color recommendations that fit a real person’s life. Personal color only becomes a true science when human expertise and machine accuracy work together. The CUBE is where that partnership begins.

The Technology Behind the System

COCORY CUBE

In 2014, COCORY introduced the world's first skin-color measurement stage integrated directly into personal color analysis. The CUBE collects and analyzes skin-color data with scientific precision, forming the foundation of COCORY's Tone Formula.

Our System Built for Global Color

What began as a commitment to research, development and cultural honesty has grown into something much larger. As Korean culture has found its place on the world stage, COCORY’s system has traveled with it, tested and validated across 78 countries and 50,000 individuals.

We built something original. We continue to refine it. And we welcome anyone, from anywhere, who wants color analysis done with genuine precision.
